10 october was pretty well-spent, i think. i woke up at 5.30am(!!), took a slow walk along the singapore river at sunrise, and the spent the rest of the day underground, at the basement of the asian civilisations museum.
as luck (haha) would have it i was picked to be a student volunteer at the psfk conference asia. which means doing random errands and more importantly, getting a chance to listen in on some of the top creatives in the... creative industry today. it was a full day event with an unmentionable entrance fee ($1000!!), but i would say that it was money and time well-spent, especially for the networking opportunities.
the conference opened with a panel discussion with jackson tan of phunk studio and chris lee of asylum on the singapore design scene. several interesting questions were posed, about finding inspiration in singapore, and about design education too. there was an interesting presentation by flamingo international of nostalgia and the surge of retro among chinese youth (the imagery of nostalgia and the shared memories of tv cartoons like transformers provide a solid grounding for identity-forming against the constant transformation of the urban and visual landscape of today.)
the conference ended on a high note too. robert campbell of sunshine gave one of the best presentations of the day, and i had to leave in the middle of jeff staple's (nike pigeon!) closing presentation, just when it got interesting.
then there was the afterparty at superfamous, with a showcase of works by local designers presented by awe50me.
____
